Lyrics

IN THE PEN (IN RICHMOND VA)
Mychals/Tate c2013

If you will stop and listen
I will tell you of my wrong
I'll make it plain and simple
WHILE I SING THIS LITTLE SONG
Now my story goes back
to the year of '23
I got into some trouble
and lost my liberty

A young man was murdered
On me they laid the crime
They sent me down to Richmond
To do a LITTLE time

CHORUS
STUCK IN THE PEN UP IN RICHMOND VA
20 LONG YEARS IS WHAT I HAVE TO PAY 7,000 mornin, noon, and nights
ONE HOUR AT A TIME 24 EACH DAY
STUCK IN THE PEN UP IN RICHMOND VA

I stayed in Prison 13 months
THANK GOD I made parole
I went straight back to the home I left
NOW I'M in a DREADFUL hole
I had lost all my money
DAMN NEAR LOST MY MIND
LOST TOUCH WITH MY FAMILY
THERE WERE NO JOBS TO FIND

BECAUSE OF MY PAROLE
I COULDN'T GO BACK TO RUNNIN SHINE
I had to take what I could get
So I WENT DOWN IN THEM DARK COAL mines

CHORUS

THEY SAID I WAS TO OLD FOR THE MINES
and there was nothing else to choose
I had to have some way to live
So I TURNED BACK TO SELLIN' BOOZE
They caught me with a WAGON FULL
And then they took me in
I HAD no business with that stuff
NOW I'M BACK HERE IN THE PEN
So HERE I am ONCE AGAIN
with 19 years to do
I PRAY the Lord will bless me
and GIVE ME STRENGTH to pull through
